Jamsetji's earliest business venture was a cotton trading firm. He began this business in 1848 with a small loan from his father. The business was successful, and Jamsetji soon expanded into other areas, such as banking and insurance. In 1868, he founded the Tata Group, which is now one of the largest conglomerates in India.
