Nightshift is the name given to the night of cabinet recall on 10 August 1971, during which Prime Minister Edward Heath recalled the House of Commons to order the suspension of the Northern Ireland Parliament and the introduction of Direct Rule. The decision was taken following the Provisional Irish Republican Army's (IRA) bombing campaign in Northern Ireland and mainland Britain.
