Jan Vertonghen replaced Luis Suarez as captain of Ajax after the Uruguayan striker joined Liverpool in January 2011. Vertonghen had been vice-captain since 2010, and was named as Suarez's successor after the club's board decided that the forward was not a suitable candidate to lead the team. Vertonghen went on to captain Ajax for five seasons, before leaving for Tottenham Hotspur in July 2012.
