Jan Železný set his world record in men's javelin throw in 1996, at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta. His throw of 98.48 metres was the first time anyone had thrown over 98 metres. It stood as the world record for 12 years, until it was broken by Czech thrower Krištof Čech in 2008.
