Jari Litmanen's international career started in 1989, when he was selected to play for the Finland national football team for the first time. He made his debut in a friendly match against Turkey on 29 May 1989, coming on as a substitute in the second half. He scored his first international goal in a 3–2 win over Norway on 14 October 1989.
