Marías studied philosophy and literature at the Complutense University of Madrid. He was a student of José Ortega y Gasset, one of the most influential Spanish philosophers of the 20th century. Marías later became a professor of philosophy at the Complutense University, and he also taught at other universities in Spain and the United States.
