Jean Alesi had originally intended to eventually compete in rallying. However, his father, who was a successful rally driver, wanted him to be a Formula One driver. Alesi's father was a mechanic for Jean-Pierre Beltoise, and Beltoise recommended Alesi to Enzo Ferrari. Alesi's first Formula One race was at the 1989 French Grand Prix, where he finished 11th.
