Studying medicine abroad resided between the different roles of his career. After serving in the Army, he studied medicine at the University of Leipzig in Germany. He then returned to America and served as a surgeon in the US Army during the Spanish-American War. He then worked as a professor of medicine at the University of Louisville. He finally became president of the American Medical Association.
