Jean-Bédel Bokassa took power via the Saint-Sylvestre coup d'état on 1 January 1966. Bokassa was a member of the Central African Republic's military, and he had been involved in several previous coups. He was appointed prime minister by President David Dacko in December 1965, but he quickly turned against Dacko and launched a coup on New Year's Eve.
