The French Royal Army initially enlisted Nicolas Soult. He joined as a private and rose through the ranks to become a Marshal of France. He served under Napoleon Bonaparte during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. During the Peninsular War, he commanded the French forces in Spain and was defeated by the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
