Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse, was a French naval officer and explorer. He is best known for his expedition to the Pacific Ocean from 1785 to 1788, during which he explored the coast of North America and the Hawaiian Islands. Lapérouse was killed in a storm during his voyage, and his remains were never found.
