Louis XVI was the King of France from 1774 until 1792, when he was executed during the French Revolution. In 1785, he ordered the French explorer Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse, to lead an expedition to circumnavigate the globe. Lapérouse's expedition was lost at sea, and its fate was not known until the 1820s.
