The Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers (Encyclopedia, or a Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts, and Trades) was a French encyclopedia written by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. The first volume was published in 1751 and the last in 1772. It was a monumental work of scholarship, covering a wide range of subjects in detail.
