Jenny Shipley entered Parliament in 1987, when she was elected to represent the Epsom electorate. She was the first woman to be elected to represent Epsom, and she served as the MP for the electorate until 2002. Shipley also served as the Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1997 to 1999, and she was the first woman to hold this position.
