He was hired by head coach Will Muschamp in 2012, and helped lead the Gators to a 10-4 record and a berth in the Outback Bowl. Pruitt's defense was ranked 13th in the nation in total defense, and 12th in scoring defense. He left Florida after the 2013 season to become the defensive coordinator at Alabama.
