Answer
Jesse James was killed by Robert Ford, a member of his own gang, on April 3, 1882, in St. Joseph, Missouri. Ford shot James in the back of the head as he was straightening a picture frame, allegedly to collect a reward offered by the Missouri governor for James' capture. James' death marked the end of one of the most notorious outlaw careers in American history.
