After her debut album was not released, Lauryn Hill asked to be released from the label to continue her education. She spent the next few years studying at Columbia University, where she earned a degree in African-American studies. In 1998, she released her second album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which was a critical and commercial success. The album won five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
