Peiper's death sentence was commuted in 1946. The sentence was commuted to life in prison after a year of deliberation by the US military, which had initially sentenced him to death. Peiper was eventually released from prison in 1956 and returned to Germany, where he lived out the rest of his life in relative obscurity.
