In 1974, a military coup overthrew the authoritarian government of Portugal and led to the independence of several Portuguese colonies in Africa. In Guinea-Bissau, the Military Council of the Revolution, led by João Bernardo Vieira, assumed control. Vieira initially ruled as president of the council, but in 1979 he seized power in a military coup and became the country's first president.
