Answer

The Institute of Physics appointed its first female president in 2011. Dame Mary Archer, a fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry, was appointed as interim president in April 2011 and took up the role on a full-time basis in September of that year. She was the first woman to hold the post in the institute's 150-year history.
