Thornton played with the Bruins for seven seasons, from 2005 to 2012. He was a key member of the team during that time, helping them reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 2011. Thornton was a three-time All-Star with the Bruins and won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer in 2006. He was also named the NHL's Most Valuable Player in 2006.
