Murdered in Trieste on June 8, 1768, by Francesco Arcangeli, a young Italian man whom he had befriended. Arcangeli was apprehended immediately after the crime, tried and found guilty of murder, and executed by hanging on June 11. The motives for the crime remain unclear, but it is believed that Arcangeli may have been motivated by a combination of factors, including financial gain and personal animosity.
