Answer
Eriugena's predecessor at the Palace School at Aachen was Alcuin of York. Alcuin was a Northumbrian scholar who had studied in Ireland before moving to the Frankish court in the 8th century. He was a close friend of Charlemagne and played a major role in the revival of learning in the Carolingian Empire. Alcuin's influence can be seen in the work of Eriugena, who was one of his students.
