John A. Calhoun never served as ambassador to Tunisia. He served as the seventh Vice President of the United States from 1825 to 1832 under President John Quincy Adams and again from 1845 to 1849 under President James K. Polk. He was also a Senator from South Carolina and Secretary of State under President John Tyler.
