A boy, John A. Macdonald immigrated to Canada in 1820 with his family from Scotland. They settled in Kingston, Ontario, where Macdonald's father worked as a merchant. Macdonald received his education in Kingston and studied law. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1844 and served as Prime Minister of Canada from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891.
