Barbirolli declined an invitation to become the permanent musical director of the Royal Opera House in London in 1946. He had been invited by the opera's board of directors to replace Sir Thomas Beecham, who had left the company the previous year. Barbirolli was initially interested in the position, but he ultimately decided that he did not want to move to London permanently.
