Arturo Toscanini was the music director of the New York Philharmonic from 1926 to 1936. He was a very successful conductor and the Philharmonic became one of the most famous orchestras in the world under his leadership. After Toscanini retired, John Barbirolli was appointed as his successor. Barbirolli was a British conductor who had previously worked with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
