Craig L. Thomas was the incumbent senator before John Barrasso. Thomas, a Republican, served in the U.S. Senate from 1995 until his death in 2007. He was a member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and the Senate Committee on Finance. Barrasso, also a Republican, was appointed to the Senate in 2007 to fill the vacancy created by Thomas's death.
