John Cabell Breckinridge was appointed as the Confederate Secretary of War in February 1865. He had previously served as the Confederate Secretary of State and Vice President of the Confederacy. He was responsible for overseeing the Confederate military during the final months of the Civil War. He was captured by Union forces in April 1865 and imprisoned until 1869.
