Answer
John Cabot was commissioned by King Henry VII to explore North America in 1497. He was a Genoese explorer who sailed from Bristol, England, in search of a northwest passage to Asia. Cabot landed on the coast of North America in Newfoundland, and claimed the land for England. He returned to England with news of his discovery, but he was never able to make another voyage to North America.
