Millais's later works were enormously successful financially. This was due in part to the growing popularity of portraiture among the British upper class, and in part to Millais's own skill at depicting his subjects in a flattering light. As a result, he was able to charge high prices for his paintings, and he eventually became one of the most successful artists of his time.
