John Hume was the leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) from 1979 to 2001. Under his leadership, the SDLP became the largest nationalist party in Northern Ireland and played a key role in the Northern Ireland peace process. Hume was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998 for his efforts to bring peace to Northern Ireland.
