John III Doukas Vatatzes was an Emperor of Nicaea from 1222 to 1254. He was the son of Theodore I Laskaris, the first Emperor of Nicaea. John III was a skilled military commander and he expanded the territory of the Empire of Nicaea. He also supported the arts and literature.
