Augustus II, Elector of Saxony, succeeded John III Sobieski as King of Poland. He was elected by the Polish nobility in 1697, after the death of Sobieski. Augustus II's reign was marked by the Great Northern War, during which he briefly lost the Polish throne to Stanisław Leszczyński. However, he was able to regain the crown with the help of Russian troops.
