Discover the Northwest Passage was the goal of the Franklin Expedition. This expedition, led by Sir John Franklin, set out in 1845 with two ships, the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror, to find a navigable route through the Arctic from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. The expedition became trapped in ice and all 129 crew members perished.
