Crittenden was born on September 10, 1787. He was a lawyer and politician from Kentucky who served as the 14th Governor of Kentucky from 1835 to 1839 and as a U.S. Senator from Kentucky from 1843 to 1861. He was a member of the Whig Party and later the American Party. He was also a delegate to the 1861 Confederate Provisional Congress.
