John J. Crittenden served as the U.S. Attorney General under Presidents Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore. He did not serve under President Abraham Lincoln. Crittenden was a prominent member of the Whig Party and opposed the policies of the Republican Party, which Lincoln led. Crittenden was also a strong advocate of the Union and opposed secession. He died in 1863, shortly after the start of the Civil War.
