Rehnquist succeeded Harlan II on the Supreme Court. Appointed by President Reagan, he served as the 16th Chief Justice of the United States from 1986 until his death in 2005. Before his elevation to Chief Justice, Rehnquist had been an Associate Justice since 1972, appointed by President Nixon.
