John of Damascus (c. 675 – 749) was an influential Syrian theologian, philosopher, and hymnographer. His original name was Manṣūr ibn Sarjūn. He was one of the most important Christian thinkers of the early Middle Ages. He is considered a Father of the Church and a Doctor of the Church. His work was particularly influential in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
