Damascus was the place of birth of John the Baptist. He was born in a cave in the Judean Desert, near the town of Ein Kerem. His parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth, were both descended from the priestly line of Aaron. John was a prophet who preached repentance and baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
