In 1978, Karol Wojtyła was elected Pope John Paul II. He was the first non-Italian pope in more than 400 years. He was also the first Slavic pope and the first pope from a Communist country. He was a strong advocate for human rights and played a major role in the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe. He died in 2005 and was canonized a saint in 2014.
