Pope John Paul II was canonized by Pope Francis on 27 April 2014, just over a year after his death on 2 April 2005. He was the first pope to be canonized in the 21st century, and the third pope to be canonized by a pope from a different country. The canonization was celebrated in St. Peter's Square, and was attended by over 1 million people.
