Pemberton was wounded in April of 1865 during the American Civil War. Pemberton was the lieutenant general in the Army of the Confederacy. Towards the end of the Civil War, he led the final defense of Vicksburg. At the end of the war when he surrendered Vicksburg to General Ulysses S. Grant, he handed over his ceremonial sabre as part of the surrender.
