John S. McCain Jr., father of the 2008 presidential candidate John McCain, commanded a number of submarines in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was credited with sinking several Japanese ships, and was eventually promoted to the rank of Admiral. After the war, McCain served as a senator from Arizona, and was a leading advocate for the United States Navy.
