John Sherman Cooper was born in Somerset, Kentucky, on August 23, 1901. He graduated from Centre College in 1923 and later earned a law degree from the University of Kentucky. Cooper served as a county attorney, commonwealth attorney, and Kentucky State Senator before being elected to the United States Senate in 1946.
