The greenhouse effect was not termed as such during Joseph Fourier's lifetime. The term was coined by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius in 1896. Fourier's work was on heat transfer and he was the first to propose that the Earth's atmosphere acts like a greenhouse, trapping heat from the Sun and keeping the planet warm.
