John V died in 1750. He was the King of Portugal from 1706 until his death. During his reign, he oversaw the reconstruction of Lisbon after the devastating 1755 earthquake. He was also a patron of the arts and sciences, and founded the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon.
