John White retreated to Raleigh's estates in Ireland after the failure of the Roanoke colony. He had been governor of the colony, but was forced to leave in 1587 due to a lack of supplies. When he returned three years later, the colony had been abandoned and the inhabitants had disappeared. White died in 1593 without ever knowing what had happened to his people.
