In 1587, artist and mapmaker John White accompanied Sir Walter Raleigh's expedition to establish a permanent settlement in Roanoke Island, Virginia. He returned to England in 1588 and made several attempts to return to Roanoke Island, but each attempt was thwarted by war with Spain.
