After John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865, he fled to the farm of Samuel Mudd in Charles County, Maryland. Mudd treated Booth's broken leg and then helped him escape to Virginia. Booth hid in a barn on the farm of Richard Garrett, where he was found by Union soldiers on April 26. Booth was shot and killed while attempting to escape.
